Entirely landlocked within central Europe lies captivating Hungary. Set on the River Danube, its graceful capital, Budapest, is home to a fifth of the country's total population, and offers a diverse landscape of majestic plains, rural villages and resort-lined lakes. A truly magnificent city, Budapest was founded in 1873 after the alliance of three separate towns - Buda, Óbuda and Pest. One third of the city comprises hilly Buda and Óbuda, which lie on the western bank of the Danube, and flat Pest, on the eastern bank, occupies the remaining two thirds.

Must See
There are over 60 museums and galleries throughout Budapest housing local and International collections. The National Gallery displays art dating from the middles ages through to 20th Century, and the Museum of Military History houses displays illustrating the history of Hungarian weaponry.

Budapest is home to many Gothic and Renaissance buildings and there is a prevalence of Neo-Classical style 17th Century churches and synagogues. The city is also home to numerous intriguing palaces. The Royal Palace dates back to the 13th Century and is home to some of the finest museums in the city. Péterffy Pàlace, built in 1756, is housed in one of the few Baroque mansions that remain in Pest.

As one of the great spa cities of Europe, a wide choice of baths and pools are scattered around the capital. Széchenyi Thermal Baths are the hottest and most beautiful in Budapest and Platinus offers seven swimming pools, hot springs and water slides.

Shopping
The fashionable Váci utca (Váci Street) in Pest tends to be the focal point of Budapest's shopping. Luxus and Fontana are two of the largest department stores along this street, offering clothing as well as accessories and perfumes. Westend City Centre is an exciting new mall, central Europe's largest, housing over 350 stores including Armani, Benetton & M&S.

After Dark
Nightlife ranges from hidden away pockets of Hungarian culture to newer, more contemporary venues. Bars & restaurants are definitely shifting towards a more cosmopolitan atmosphere to cater for an increasing number of International clientele. Despite this, there remains a large number of authentic Hungarian establishments.
