Agadir

Vibrant Agadir stretches along the coast for 10 km on the Atlantic Ocean and is surrounded by the Atlas Mountains. This is a popular holiday destination because of the predictable climate of sunshine all year-round, with just the occasional unpredictable rainy day. The wide sandy bay and the backdrop of the snow-capped Atlas with the River Souss to the south make a pretty picture. Agadir is a bustling commercial city, rebuilt by the famous French architect Le Corbusier, who constructed earthquake-resistant buildings. Centuries ago, the local inhabitants built the Kasbah for the Dutch fleet, who used Agadir as a supply stop. The Kasbah is, in fact, one of the few monuments still surviving from the earthquake of 1960, which razed the town to the ground. Today however, this colourful holiday destination boasts a plethora of activities, sights and hotels.

Must See
There is plenty to do and see here on your holiday. To fill half a day, you might want to visit the local souk (market), try desert and camel treks, shark fishing, city sightseeing or visit the ancient oasis town of Taroudannt. You can join a full day trip to the fishing port of Essaouira with its colourful old town; or head for Marrakech. The expansive 7 miles strip of fine, sandy beach offers a number of beach facilities and sports. If you are a nature lover visit the Valley of the Birds comprising a zoo, aviary and a playground. If you fancy it, you could take donkey and camel rides. Art lovers must visit the folk art museum and there is a theatre too. Try exploring the local highland villages for some healthy exercise.

Shopping
If you love shopping for bargains Agadir offers a wide variety of shops, and the large souks (local markets) offer the opportunity to haggle. You will also find boutiques and bazaars, which are less traditional than in some of the older cities of Morocco. Supermarkets sell at fixed prices and you can buy everything from cornflakes, vegetables, Moroccan handicrafts and even wine.

After Dark
Agadir provides a wide selection of restaurants to suit all pockets, whatever your holiday requirements may be. Being a fishing port, it offers an impressive variety of seafood at affordable prices. You will find variety of cuisines with influences from French, Oriental, Scandinavian, Italian and Spanish as well as authentic Moroccan restaurants, there are also many local cafes. The numerous bars occasionally have live music, folk dancers and singers providing the entertainment. Or you can find nightclubs in some of the hotels, some of which have evening cabarets.
