Unique and resonant, The Netherlands is a prosperous country with an atmospheric capital. A relaxed, modern municipality, Amsterdam astounds all who visit - from its wealth of artistic jewels and deep-set history, to the renowned seamy side, it's as refined as it is liberal. Amsterdam's beginnings were humble. Originally a fishing settlement that developed on the marshy banks of the River Amstel, it was dammed in 1222 and consequently named 'Amstelledamme'. In the years following, canals began to be cut to drain more land and provide transport channels creating the extraordinary network of waterways, which to this day are marvelled by all who visit.

From its endless supply of intertwined canals & waterways and awe inspiring museums & galleries, to its lively squares and the infamous Red Light District - Amsterdam offers a distinct blend of historic beauty and modernism with a unique liberal attitude. This vibrant metropolis has something for visitors from all walks of life.

The free-thinking city is split into seven main areas: the Western Canal Ring, Eastern Canal Ring, Central Canal Ring, Museum Quarter, Plantage and the heart - Oude Zijde (Old Side) and Nieuwe Zijde (New Side). On the Old Side you will find plenty of historic and beautiful buildings to explore along with the infamous Red Light District, now one of the city's leading tourist attractions. On the New Side pockets of history left behind after the 1452 fires remain, but much of the area has been reconstructed and it is now home to some of the best shopping streets in Amsterdam.

A treasure trove of artistic and historical riches, Amsterdam is far from short of remarkable cultural sites, prestigious structures and enlightening museums & galleries. Collections from distinguished artists such as Van Gogh and Picasso are scattered across the city and you can even visit the former home of Rembrandt.

Amsterdam has 75km of canals, each providing the perfect setting for a stroll or boat tour. Beside these canals you will find a myriad of bank-side cafés, astounding views and beautiful bridges, the most impressive of which lie on the River Amstel.

Shopping
Amsterdam's shopping areas are vast - each with their own special character. Most chain stores are located in the Kalverstraat and Nieuwendijk areas. For art and antiques try Rokin, running adjacent to Kalverstraat and for designer fashion P C Hoofstraat, in the Museum Quarter. Plenty of markets here too - try Albert Cuypmarkt, Noordemarkt and Waterlooplein for anything from jewellery to fruit.

After Dark
At night, Amsterdam really comes into it's own. Leidsplein is the city's tourist hub - for fun nights out it's a huge gathering place. Bars and clubs in the city are of an extremely lively, welcoming and friendly nature. Club wise, Amsterdam's just as blessed. Amsterdam offers everything from rich and elaborate cuisine to the more reasonably priced restaurants and Eetcafés (Eat Cafés). There are hundreds of alternative restaurants across the city offering everything from Indonesian to Moroccan or just plain old English.
