Djerba Guide

Djerba
Flight time from UK: 3hrs 30mins (approx)

Off the south east coast of Tunisia Djerba is quite near the Libyan border. Djerba is an island town in the Gulf of Gabes and is connected to the mainland by a causeway. The island flourishes with groves and orchards of citrus and olives and palm trees add to the thick greenery.

The main town here is Houmt Souk which is where most of the population resides. With a recent tourism boom, the resort is a popular destination though fortunately it has until now managed to stave off commercialisation. Unspoilt beaches, wide with soft sand are the key reason why people head to Djerba.

Must See
Splendid in its diversity Djerba offers a variety of sea sports, Roman sites and even a pirate's castle! Other must-sees are the ancient synagogue of the Griba and the fortress like mosques. Visit the bustle of the open air markets where potters and silversmiths still faithful to the art of their craft sell their wares.

Discover the shady gardens of the interior, orchards of fig, apple and pomegranate, wander through groves of olive trees, with gnarled trunks bearing witness to the centuries past.

Shopping
Houmt Souk has a small concentration of typical souvenir shops and souks selling local jewellery, trinkets, rugs and wool products. Most hotels have their own more expensive in-house retailers selling anything from leather goods to postcards. The village of Guellala is a big pottery-producing centre.

After Dark
Restaurants throughout this island serve seafood famed for its freshness, and traditional dishes that can be savoured on shady patios or on cool waterside patios. There are a few cafes in Houmt Souk but most choose to eat in the restaurants and snack bars within the hotel complexes. Bars and discos are limited here however most hotels have their own internal entertainment programmes with live bands and dancing.
