In the clear, azure waters of the Mediterranean Antalya is situated on the southern coast of Turkey. Located on a bay, it is backed by the Taurus Mountains and the landscape is simply amazing. Pleasing Antalya is Turkey's fourth largest city and boasts palm-lined boulevards and an eye-catching shopping complex. Antalya was founded in the 2nd Century BC and has had the Romans, Byzantines, Seljuks and the Ottomans living there, leaving behind a rich culture and plethora of history. You will find distinct minarets and mosques built in the 16th and 18th Centuries, a reminder of what it was like in the days gone by. Sport-lovers can enjoy water sports at some of the beaches and for the die-hard golfers there are good courses nearby.

Must See
A place to see is Kaleici, the Old City, with its quaint wooden houses and winding streets. The streets here have a plethora of shops and cafés where you can buy carpets, t-shirts and leather goods or take a trip to the picturesque harbour with its fine marina. In a city steeped in history, there is naturally plenty to explore other than the beaches. Head to the Taurus Mountains or the Duden waterfalls or visit the Pamukkale hot springs, Karian caves and the hidden gorge at Saklikent. You could also explore the ruins at Termessos and at Side, Aspendos and Perge. There are also beautiful national parks in Termessos and Duzlercami.

Shopping
The Ataturk Boulevard and the upmarket city centre attract the regular high-street shoppers, while the shops in the old town cater to those on the look-out for carpets and other craft items.

After Dark
Catering largely for tourists, this town serves pastas and pizzas in plenty, although you will also find some more traditional Turkish grills to sample, with local mezze a popular choice. The restaurants in the harbour and the marina are very good though they tend to be more highly priced. The harbour area, with its busy nightlife, beckons those who enjoy entertainment after dark.
